Before the World Wakes Up: Build a Morning Routine that Works
No Cold Plunges Required!
Tim Cook is up by 4am. Jeff Bezos famously refuses to schedule anything important before 10am, protecting his mornings for high-stakes thinking because that’s when his mind is sharpest. Michelle Obama used to hit the gym at 4:30am, before the world had a chance to ask anything of her.
It’s not a coincidence. The most successful people treat mornings as sacred because mornings are the one stretch of the day nobody else has claimed yet. No emails. No meetings. No fires to put out. Just you, your priorities, and momentum you control … and it doesn’t have to start at 4 am - that can be a bit intense.
Momentum matters more than people think. If you can win the first hour, you tend to win most of the day. Start reactive, and you often stay reactive until your day ends.
How do you build a routine that sticks? Start by brainstorming what belongs there:
Resolutions that quietly died in February. Exercise, better communication with a colleague, hitting a client or revenue goal, finishing that project. Which of these could live in your morning?
Rainmaking and Planning. Reaching out to old clients, checking in after a big close, reviewing your task list, building tomorrow’s plan today.
Self-Care. Vitamins, movement, breakfast, five minutes of quiet before the noise starts.
Then sketch a rough schedule. Don’t aim for perfection! You’ll adjust and evolve as you go. The goal isn’t a flawless system on day one; it’s protecting that undisturbed window before the world wakes up and starts sending emails.
